Finally swapped out the stock all-seasons for some summer tires yesterday. It comes with Hankook Ventus S1s which have very poor grip, particularly in the wet. After sliding like 5 car lengths and nearly rear-ending someone in the rain during an only somewhat aggressive stop I figured it was time to upgrade.

I went with Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s which get a lot of praise on the GTI forums. It came out to about...$500 in total. Not bad considering I paid twice as much for Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my Focus ST a few years back. Obviously these tires aren’t as good, but I’m just driving on the street so I probably wouldn’t notice the difference. Compared to the all-seasons though, wow! I took a few aggressive turns that would easily induce understeer before but now it just bites hard. There’s maybe a touch more of an edge to the ride now but it’s still just fine for a DD. Overall I’m pretty happy.

Nice, I also just got the Indy 500's and agree with you on the handling , they’re pretty good in the rain too.

Nice. I went with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ myself, but I like to practice for autocross if I find a secluded series of corners while on my street tires . . .

Indy 500s last a while too. They lasted 20k miles last year with 3 trips to the tail and an autocross + me driving like a maniac everywhere in the Mini.

That’s good to know. They’re warrantied for 40k so it would be nice if they lasted that long.

Agreed on the Indy 500s. Good tire - particularly for a heavier car. They were way better on my Lancer than the G-Force Sport Comp 2's that I put on it later or the P-Zero Nero GT tire that I have on it now.

The nice thing about Texas is that you can drive summer tires all year. Would have gone for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s if I was feeling spendier but the Firestones  were hundreds less in total and seem pretty well regarded. Hopefully they hold up

Ah, I see you had them  as well. What were they on? Looks like an Infiniti?

G37X. The Hankooks lasted just 12k miles before wearing down ro 4/32 in the rear requiring replacement

Wow that’s awful. Mine were at 21k but I didn’t check the wear before switching since the grip was always crap.

Curious as to why you think they are good for a heavier car? ... I just got some for a Miata, lol.
